Growing Roots Before Standing Tall

The world often encourages us to move faster—to create new routines, set bigger goals, and produce visible results.

But before getting swept up in the pressure to do more, consider a gentler idea:

Before anything grows tall, it grows roots.

Roots do not arrive with celebration or recognition. They form quietly beneath the surface, long before anyone can see the growth they are supporting.

The Progress You Cannot See

Some changes are visible right away. Others are working silently beneath the surface, much like the roots that develop before a tree gains even an inch above ground.

Many of us carry the belief that progress should always be measurable. We want a milestone we can point to and say, “See? That’s what I accomplished.”

But that is not how trees grow—and it is not always how we grow, either.

A tree spends years developing a root system that will never be seen. Those roots anchor it, nourish it, and prepare it to withstand everything that comes with growing taller.

We often want the big, obvious result, and we want it right now. Sound familiar?

Transformation rarely happens that way. It is usually built through small, repeated actions taken consistently, long before visible proof appears.

As Carl Sagan said:

“Absence of evidence is not evidence of absence.”

Read that again and let it land.

Where in your life have you been waiting for visible proof before allowing yourself to believe something is working?

What inspired actions have you taken that have not produced an obvious result yet—but may already be taking root?

Trust the Root-Growing Phase

The discomfort of not seeing results does not necessarily mean you are doing something wrong. It may simply mean you are in the root-growing phase—the part that must happen before visible growth can follow.

This is an invitation to trust those roots.

Keep taking the small, meaningful actions, even when—and especially when—nothing appears to be changing on the surface.

Your effort is not wasted simply because its results have not yet become visible.

Acknowledge the Shifts Happening Underground

In my women’s group recently, we talked about how much energy can be invested before a desired result appears.

One of the women has been taking action every day. She is showing up, doing the work, and making bold choices, yet she is not seeing the visible results she wants.

Understandably, that feels frustrating. We naturally want our effort to produce an immediate and recognizable outcome.

But we are not always in charge of when the results arrive.

This reminded me of my early days in film development. I had several projects underway, each with a different writer or director, a different story, and its own unique challenges.

Every day, we were talking, refining scripts, strengthening project packages, and working through everything required to move each project toward financing.

Some projects were easier than others. Some seemed to move quickly, while others required what felt like endless effort with very little visible progress.

But we kept going.

Eventually, something would shift. The right person would come on board. A script would finally meet the necessary requirements. A financing conversation would open up. A project that had felt completely stuck would suddenly begin moving forward.

Looking back, I realize those breakthroughs were rarely the result of one specific action. They were the culmination of all the conversations, decisions, revisions, and steady work that had taken place before the outcome became visible.

The same can be true in our own lives.

Just because you cannot see the result yet does not mean nothing is happening.

Our role is to continue showing up, taking action, refining, learning, and creating the conditions for what we want.

We may not control when the result arrives, but we do control what we do while we wait—and, more importantly, who we choose to be throughout the process.

Try the Rooted & Rising Challenge

Instead of setting one enormous goal, choose one small, repeatable action.

Choose something so simple that it almost feels too easy to count.

Rather than choosing a broad goal such as “get fit,” “fix my finances,” “be more social,” or “find my purpose,” identify one small action you can repeat without needing to see an immediate result.

You might choose to:

  • Take three deep breaths and allow yourself to feel calm before opening your laptop each morning.
  • Go for a two-minute walk outside without your phone once a day.
  • Say one kind sentence to yourself before going to bed.
  • Pause each day to acknowledge something you already appreciate about your life.

Choose your action, write it down, and repeat it daily—even on the days when it feels difficult.

After practising it consistently for a while, do not ask, “Did this change my life?”

Instead, ask:

“Did I keep showing up?”

That consistency is the root. The visible growth comes later.

You Are Rooted and Ready

There can be tremendous pressure to keep moving, accomplish more, and prove that we are making progress.

But we have the opportunity—and the choice—to resist that pressure, even if only a little.

Every root you have grown is real, including the ones you cannot see yet. The shift is happening, even during the moments when nothing appears to be changing.

When your mind begins rushing ahead and chasing the next visible milestone, pause. Ground yourself and trust the process, even when you cannot yet see the evidence.

Keep showing up.

Keep nurturing the roots.

Keep becoming the person who is ready to receive what is growing.

Your progress may still be beneath the surface, but that does not make it any less real.

Victoriously Yours,
Victoria
