The golden glow and warmth of summer invite us to slow down. Yet, while the outside world may already be rushing us toward September, nature—and our bodies—whisper a softer invitation:
Pause. Bask. Receive.
Giving ourselves permission to slow down sounds simple, but it can feel surprisingly uncomfortable. After months of constant activity, busyness, and looking ahead to the next thing, rest can feel unfamiliar.
Try crossing your arms with your non-dominant arm on top. It feels strange, doesn’t it? Slowing down can feel much the same way. It requires us to adjust to a new rhythm and practise a different way of being.
When a Break Doesn’t Feel Like a Break
I used to “take a holiday” while packing six months’ worth of reading materials—scripts, books, and newspapers. Can anyone else relate?
I would return from my so-called break feeling less rested than before, with most of my reading pile still untouched.
Even when we physically step away from work, our minds often continue spinning. Plans, worries, unfinished tasks, and all the things we believe we should be doing can follow us wherever we go.
True rest is not simply about creating an empty calendar or booking a luxurious spa day. The real challenge—and opportunity—is giving ourselves radical permission to simply be.
Take a moment to consider:
- Where do you notice your mind racing ahead, even when your body is still?
- What mental baggage are you carrying—plans, worries, expectations, or “shoulds”?
- If you gave yourself permission to do nothing for a little while, what feelings or insights might arise?
Unkinking the Hose
Imagine a garden hose filled with fresh, cool water. The water represents the goodness and spaciousness you desire. It is already there, ready to flow.
But each time you judge yourself for resting, add another unnecessary task, or allow guilt to creep in, it is like placing a kink in the hose. The flow still exists, but it cannot reach you.
Our invitation is to begin unwinding those kinks, one at a time.
Each time you notice the pressure to keep doing, achieving, or proving yourself, pause. Soften. Release the guilt just a little.
As you unkink the hose, you allow more rest, clarity, creativity, and inspiration to flow into your life—even if it begins as only a trickle.
It is a process, and it begins with awareness.
Letting Go of the “Shoulds”
A client recently experienced a breakthrough that lit me up inside. She realized she was not avoiding her dream because she lacked desire or motivation. Instead, she was continually judging herself, second-guessing her choices, and keeping track of everything she believed she “should” or “could” have done better.
We cannot fully receive what we desire—whether it is rest, self-love, joy, or permission to dream—when our attention is tangled in self-judgment and regret.
What we focus on grows. When our minds remain fixed on criticism, we unintentionally kink the hose, interrupting the flow of self-acceptance and forward momentum.
The victory begins when we notice the pattern.
Rather than trying to fix herself, my client chose one simple but powerful action: whenever she noticed herself getting tangled in “shoulds,” she would gently acknowledge and release them one at a time.
As she practised, self-acceptance, softness, and moments of joy began to flow again—often during the most ordinary parts of her day.
Where could you let go, even a little, and allow more self-love to flow through your life?
Sometimes, it begins with simply noticing.
Try the Sunny Slowdown Challenge
Give yourself five minutes—just five—to do nothing.
Set a timer, leave your phone inside, and find a comfortable place outdoors. Sit beneath a tree, near the water, on your front step, or in the grass.
There is nothing you need to accomplish. Simply observe without judging yourself.
Notice:
- How many times does your mind race toward the next thing?
- How often do your thoughts return to the past?
- How frequently do you begin worrying about the future?
This is normal, natural, and fascinating to observe.
Each time your attention wanders, gently guide it back to the present moment. Notice what you can see, hear, smell, and feel around you.
Give yourself permission to be present. Give yourself permission to pause.
Then, notice what changes. Did a new feeling, idea, or moment of clarity appear—even briefly?
Choose to Slow Down
The contrast between the hazy days of summer and the approaching “back-to-school” buzz gives us an opportunity to consciously choose a slower pace.
Walk a little more slowly. Savour what is here. Allow yourself to enjoy this season before rushing into the next one.
Whenever you desire one thing but allow your thoughts to pull you in another direction, you create another kink in the hose. Awareness gives you the power to release it and welcome more of the self-love, peace, and joy you have been craving.
If your mind continues racing, simply notice it and choose again.
Re-decide.
Give yourself permission to enjoy a Sunny Slowdown.
The world will begin moving quickly again soon enough. For now, pause, bask, and receive.
Victoriously Yours,
Victoria
